| Yesterday, I tried to catch a black rat snake a few inches bigger than me (I am about five foot). My grandpa called me out to capture him and said he had a three to four-foot snake by his house. I eagerly followed and grabbed my gear (a snake hook and leather gloves- I could not find my good gloves with lots of grip). Once again Pa underestimated the snake’s size because it was longer than I am tall. I positioned myself next to the snake (it was on a short wall on the other side a 15-foot drop) to catch it. Right before I grabbed him, Mae yelled, “don’t let him fall!” I had him, but only for a second when……… he fell! We heard him hit a big metal tube on the scaffolding next to Pa’s house and we all rushed down to where we had seen him fall……. But he wasn’t there! We couldn’t find him anywhere! We looked for a while, but we gave up and didn’t see him again. I will continue hunting for him daily! Black Rat Snakes can get up to: seven and a half feet When they are born they are: thirteen inches They mainly eat: mice, birds and eggs |

My friend Levi and I went fishing about a week ago at Trout lake and instead of catching a fish, we caught a two-foot water snake (Northern Water Snake). I saw the snake while trying to catch a baby bass. I didn’t plan on catching it until Levi threw himself into the water after the snake, causing it to swim into the muck. We got up to our chests in water searching for it, I saw it several times and actually dove under the mucky cold water after it! Finally I grabbed it (I caught it, but Levi got bit). Fact’s about Northern Water Snakes:
Three weeks ago I caught a magnificent colored Northern Water Snake, at Coon Tree in Pisgah National Forest, North Carolina. I found this one in a patch of grass by the river’s edge. There were people yelling that it was a copperhead and not to catch it, but I caught it and it was just a Northern Water Snake. There were 2 other Northern Water Snakes: one blind and the other too fast. I think it was a male because it had bright red on the underside, where it is usually plain white, but I am still not sure. The snake was about 2 feet long, with dark brown cross bands (bands on the side of the snake) and dorsal blotches (blotches on its back). It had a reddish under belly with black specks. FACTS: Northern Water Snakes are nonvenomous, but they all have very sharp teeth and the teeth may break off in your skin. They are very heavy bodied and the biggest one I’ve caught was around 30 inches, but they can grow to be 51 inches. Me and Dad were camping the night before in our backyard. We looked for frogs and snakes with a flashlight and then we watched a movie. That morning when I was looking for a 5 inch Bull frog, when I looked into the garden and I saw the black racer in a bush and grabbed it then the bush broke. It took 1 try to break the bush and catch it. It bit me twice and then I was bleeding. I have tried to catch a lot of black racers but this is the first. Length:24 inches. Color: black with gray belly. Aggressive: it bit me! |
